Ukrainian drones reportedly carried out strikes against two Russian oil rigs in the Caspian Sea. An official from Ukraine‘s Security Service (SBU) confirmed the attacks on Friday. The SBU official stated that their drones targeted the Filanovsky and Korchagin rigs. Both oil platforms belong to Russia‘s Lukoil. This incident represents the second reported time Ukraine has hit Russian oil infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.

Confirmation of Attacks
The SBU official, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided details of the operation. They confirmed the involvement of SBU drones in targeting the offshore facilities. The confirmation came as part of a Reuters report dated December 12. Ukrainian authorities have previously asserted their right to target Russian assets involved in supporting Moscow’s war effort.
Targeted Rigs Identified
The Filanovsky and Korchagin rigs operate within the Caspian Sea basin. Lukoil, a major Russian energy company, owns both platforms. Reports indicate the Filanovsky rig constitutes a significant part of Russia’s largest oilfield in the Caspian region. Authorities did not immediately provide details about the extent of any damage.
Context of Previous Incidents
This latest incident follows an earlier reported strike on Russian oil infrastructure in the Caspian Sea. Ukraine has increasingly employed drone technology to target various Russian assets. These include military installations, energy facilities, and logistical hubs. Such operations aim to disrupt Russia’s war economy and military capabilities.
Strategic Importance of Caspian Sea
The Caspian Sea holds considerable strategic importance for Russia. It serves as a key region for oil and gas production. Furthermore, it provides transport routes for energy resources. Attacks in this area underscore Ukraine’s expanding drone capabilities. They also highlight its willingness to strike targets far from the front lines.
